Employee Enthusiasm, Energy, and Dedication Commended at Annual Chargers Celebrate Event

While closing the book on another productive academic year, staff and faculty gathered to celebrate their hard work, dedication, energy, and enthusiasm that make every year a success here at 黑料社.

The annual Chargers Celebrate event was held recently to bring employees together to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2024-25 academic year, acknowledge milestone service anniversaries, and honor individuals who were recognized for their exemplary achievements and dedication to the University.

鈥淲hat makes our community so special is your can-do spirit and your passion for serving the University and our students. Your enthusiasm is inspiring, and your energy is infectious. Milestone Service Anniversaries

At the Chargers Celebrate event, nearly 225 employees, who, combined, dedicated more than 3,000 years of service to the University, were honored celebrating milestone service anniversaries in 2024 and 2025.

Among them was a group of 10 individuals who celebrated 40-year, 45-year, and 50-year service anniversaries.

Bartels Service Awards

The University also continued its tradition of presenting the Bartels Service Awards as part of the Chargers Celebrate event.

Sponsored by longstanding University benefactors Philip H. Bartels 鈥11 Hon., a longtime member and former chair of the University of New Haven鈥檚 Board of Governors, and his wife, Susan, Bartels Service Awards are given to exemplary employees who have gone above and beyond in their dedication to the University. Each award winner receives a monetary award and a certificate.

This year, seven deserving employees were recognized. The content below was prepared by Alan MacDougall, chair of the Administrative Staff Council, based on nominations submitted by staff and faculty. Each honoree was recognized by exemplifying one (or more) of the University鈥檚 Employee Core Competencies.

Administrative Coordinator II, Forensic Science Department

鈥淏anakou Kpema is the kind of colleague who makes a department not only function but thrive. As the administrative assistant for the Forensic Science Department, Banakou brings a level of professionalism, warmth, and dedication that is truly exceptional. Her ability to manage complex schedules, support faculty, and assist students, all while maintaining a joyful and welcoming demeanor, makes her an invaluable part of the team. Her attention to detail and efficiency were especially critical during the department鈥檚 FEPAC re-accreditation process, where her work behind the scenes ensured a smooth and successful outcome.

鈥淏eyond her technical skills, Banakou is the heart of the department. Her infectious laugh and positive energy brighten the days of everyone she interacts with. She is known for going above and beyond, whether it鈥檚 helping a student in need or supporting a colleague with a last-minute request. Her deep institutional knowledge and willingness to share it generously make her a trusted resource and a true ambassador for the University.

鈥淟aura Norris has redefined the University鈥檚 digital presence with creativity, strategy, and heart. Over the past year, she has taken the lead on managing the and TikTok accounts, achieving remarkable growth in both reach and engagement. Her innovative content strategies have not only elevated the University鈥檚 brand but have also created authentic connections with students, alumni, and prospective Chargers. Laura鈥檚 work has earned national recognition, including a Gold Award for Best New Account Launch, and her efforts have become a cornerstone of the University鈥檚 recruitment and public relations success.

鈥淚n addition to her social media leadership, Laura continues to excel in her role as a designer, contributing to award-winning publications and supporting departments across campus. Her ability to balance creativity with strategy, and her willingness to take on new challenges, make her an invaluable member of the team. Laura鈥檚 collaborative spirit, attention to detail, and passion for storytelling shine through in everything she does. Executive Director, Tow Youth Justice Institute (TYJI)

鈥淓rica Nowakowski is a visionary leader whose work at the (TYJI) has had a profound impact on both the University and the state of Connecticut. Since joining TYJI in 2017, Erica has built a team that is driving meaningful legislative change in youth justice, behavioral health, and education. Under her leadership, TYJI has become a trusted voice in the General Assembly, influencing landmark reforms and giving students the opportunity to engage directly in policy development. Erica鈥檚 ability to lead with clarity, compassion, and purpose has elevated the University鈥檚 role in shaping a more just society.

Executive Director, Center for Student Engagement, Leadership and Orientation (CSELO)
Development of Self and Others; Student Engagement

鈥淕reg Overend is a pillar of the University鈥檚 student life 黑料社. For more than 20 years, Greg has been a tireless advocate for students, shaping programs and initiatives that foster leadership, inclusion, and a sense of belonging. His work with SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration) has transformed the way new students are welcomed into the University community, setting a tone of support and engagement from day one. Greg鈥檚 mentorship has had a lasting impact on countless students, many of whom credit him as a key influence in their personal and professional growth.

Chris Reed

Fire Marshal and Executive Director of Fire, Environmental & Workplace Safety

Chris has the weighty responsibilities of ensuring workplace safety and improving environmental standards, and he leads in these areas with dedication and expertise. His friendly nature and willingness to assist others make for a meaningful impact on the entire campus community.

Denise Sarro

She has spent the last several years working in the residence halls and maintaining the Bartels Student Activity Center. Denise ensures that students have a clean, safe, and welcoming environment to live and learn. Her work ethic is unmatched. She is organized, dependable, and takes the initiative to go above and beyond what鈥檚 required to provide what鈥檚 needed. Even when preparing for time off, Denise co-ordinates with her supervisor to ensure the high level of service she consistently delivers will be maintained.
